Extruded Polystyrene (EPS), better known as Styrofoam, has been used in movie sets as props and backdrops for numerous years now and has been one of the most useful products for the movie industry. Its success as a base material for prop and set construction is based on the fact that it is easily shaped, waterproof, lightweight, and bonds to a variety of paints to look like any item needed. A popular alternative is Trymer. Made from rigid urethane, a wide variety of densities are available and a great material for props and set pieces where close ups are needed as Trymer is easier to mold to a higher detail. Ideal for smaller and more detailed carvings, Trymer is a great product for handheld props or smaller displays.
